PUBLIC HEARING - U.S. 231 Project at S.R. 70 and C.R. 800 North in Spencer County

PUBLIC NOTICE FROM INDIANA DEPT. OF TRANSPORTATION

PUBLIC HEARING – U.S. 231 Intersection Improvement at S.R. 70 and C.R. 800 North in Spencer County

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) will host a public hearing at 6:00 p.m. (local time) on Wednesday, October 23, 2019, at the Spencer County Youth & Community Center, 1101 E C.R. 800 N, Chrisney, Indiana, 47611. The purpose of the public hearing is to offer all interested persons an opportunity to comment on current design plans for U.S. 231 proposed intersection improvement at S.R. 70 and C.R. 800 North, located in Spencer County.

The purpose of the project is to improve safety by eliminating the S.R. 70 and C.R. 800 N left turn and crossing movements at the U.S. 231 location. The preferred alternative proposes to convert the existing at grade intersection to Median U-Turn configurations north and south of the intersection to complete what would ordinarily be a direct left-turn or through movement from S.R. 70 and C.R. 800 N onto U.S. 231. The preliminary plans for the U-turns will be designed to provide sufficient turning radius for vehicles and trucks. Under this alternative, traffic along U.S. 231 will continue to operate unimpeded and will maintain full access for left and right turning movements onto the S.R. 70 and C.R. 800 N roadways.  Dedicated lanes will be included on U.S. 231 to allow for queuing and deceleration at the U-turn locations. Permanent lighting will be installed throughout. For additional information regarding intersection improvement and treatment types, please visit https://www.in.gov/indot/3392.htm

The proposal requires no right of way with maintenance of traffic requiring single lane closures with the outside shoulder work to be completed first, followed by median work. Access to all properties will be maintained during construction.

The environmental document and preliminary design plans are available to view prior to the public hearing at the following locations:

  1. Spencer County Library, 210 Walnut St., Rockport, IN 47635
