Monroe Lake hosts First Day Trail Run and Walk at Fairfax SRA, Jan. 1

Monroe Lake will kick off the new year with its 12th annual First Day Trail Run and Walk at Fairfax State Recreation Area (SRA), 9800 S. Fairfax Road in Bloomington, on Wednesday, Jan. 1, at 3:30 p.m.

This is an untimed, noncompetitive run/walk. Participants have an option of completing a 3.7-mile, 2.9-mile, or 1.3-mile course before ringing in the new year by tapping the bell as they cross the finish line.

Advance registration is $15 per person and available online through Dec. 30 at bit.ly/monroefirstday. Same-day registration, cash or check only, will be available at the Bay View Shelter inside Fairfax SRA from 2:15 to 3:15 p.m.

All registrations include the food station with hot soup, grilled cheese sandwiches, a wide variety of snacks, and a ticket for the prize drawing. Multiple photographers will be stationed on the course with hundreds of free photos available for download after the event.

The first 300 people to register in advance will also receive an embroidered event patch, which is a unique design every year.

Regular event updates, prize announcements, and more can be found on the Facebook event page at tinyurl.com/2025firstday-monroe.

This event is presented by Monroe Lake and co-sponsored by the Indiana Trail Running Association. Proceeds support public events, programs, and interpretation at Monroe Lake.

There is no fee to enter Fairfax SRA during winter. Questions should be directed to the Paynetown Activity Center at 812-837-9967 or to Jill Vance at [email protected].
