Messmer Column: 2023 Legislative Session

Local Sources- On this week's Messmer Column, State Senator Mark Messmer (R-Jasper) discusses the 2023 Legislative Session.

While Organizational Day in November was the ceremonial start of the 123rd Indiana General Assembly, the bulk of work for this legislative session got underway this week.

This session is a budget year, meaning much of the discussion will focus on funding government services for the next two years.

This week, Senate Republicans laid out our priorities.

Initiatives include improving Indiana's mental and public health infrastructure, maintaining a fiscally responsible government and supporting our state's law enforcement.

Senate Bill 1 would provide funding to build out a system of certified behavioral health facilities, which will help ensure all Hoosiers have access to the help they need and a place to go in a time of crisis.

Senate Bill 3 would create a state and local tax review commission in order to study the potential of ending Indiana's income tax, as well as reform property taxes for Hoosiers.

We will also work to increase the wages for the Indiana State Police and revise the pay matrix for state troopers from 20 years to 15 years so officers see a faster salary increase during their careers.

On Tuesday, Gov. Eric Holcomb laid out his priorities during the State of the State address, part of which includes raising the pay for the Indiana State Police to $70,000.

Members of the General Assembly will consider the governor's proposals during this session.

Lawmakers must conclude legislative business on or before April 29.
