Local Firework Safety Tips

Jasper- In 2021, over 11,000 people across the United States were treated for firework related injuries, according to the CPCSC. That is an increase of 25% from 2006 and 2021.

Safe and proper use of fireworks is a big part of enjoying a fun Independence Day. Jasper Fire Chief Kenny Hochesang shared some recommendations to staying safe.

“In order to stay safe, we (Jasper Fire Department) ask that children just be observers, only adults that set off fireworks and that you only set off one firework at a time. If you shoot off multiple at a time, there may be some that aren’t activated yet and a few seconds later could injure someone.”

Chief Hochesang says you should keep things in mind when celebrating.

“We (JFD) ask that you always keep a bucket of water nearby or a garden hose in the event that a firework gets away from you. Also we ask that residents clean up the debris from the fireworks as sometimes they don’t stay on your property. This also keeps the neighborhood looking nice. Also our veterans are bothered by the sound of fireworks so we ask you to be respectful.”

As for the times you can use fireworks, Indiana state law says:

-June 29-July 3rd: 5:00PM to 2 hours past sunset

-On JULY 4th: 10am-Midnight

-July 5-9th: 5:00PM to 2 hours past sunset
