Jasper- First responders from across Dubois County came together to celebrate and show support to the community they protect and serve.

On Wednesday night, the first annual Public Safety Community Day was held at Ubelhor and Sons Toyota in Jasper. Local Law Enforcement, EMS, and Firefighters welcomed the Dubois County community with games, activities, free food, and demonstrations from their departments.

“Well, I’ve been in areas before and worked in areas before where National Night Out and community policing is a big deal,” said Jasper Police Officer Clint Stewart, who organized the event. “Talking with the Chief (Nathan Schmitt), talking with the mayor we feel the same around here that it’s important that the community know the officers, know the public servants that serve them on a day to day basis. So we all came together and had this idea of making our own National Night Out.”

National Night Out is a nationwide community policing effort to make the public aware and to meet those who serve and protect them. Typically, National Night Out events are held on the first Tuesday of August. Due to Strassenfest, Dubois County chose to move theirs to the last Wednesday of the month.

Among the agencies represented were the Jasper Police Department, Dubois County Sheriff’s Office, Dubois County EMA, Memorial EMS, Huntingburg Police Department, Indiana State Police, Indiana National Guard, and Department of Natural Resources.

Event goers in the event were greeted with two demonstrations, from K-9 search, takedown, and narcotics tracking to IU Health’s Lifeline chopper landing.

Officer Stewart said this is just the first annual and there will be more coming in the future events.
