Jasper’s Parklands Schedules Prepared Burn

Jasper’s Board of Public Works and Safety assembled for their regular board meeting early Tuesday morning to discuss some plans for proactive maintenance and yuletide cheer.

Kate Schwenk from Heart of Jasper petitioned the board for permission to host a pop-up shop on the sidewalk by Just Whimsy. The shop will be open on Saturday, November 22 nd and Saturday, November 29 th . In an effort to add to the Christmas spirit on the square this year, Heart of Jasper will also begin the process of putting Christmas lights on the evergreen trees planted in the corner flower beds.

Park and Recreation Director Tom Moorman advised the board of a controlled burn at the Parklands that is scheduled for the end of September or the beginning of October. The prescribed burn would help wildflowers to thrive and is considered to be standard maintenance for a prairie. Although the local wildflowers have been growing, the seeds have a hard time reaching the ground because of some woody invasive species in the area. By clearing them out with the burn, the invasive species can be reduced so that native species can thrive. The process will be overseen by the fire department, a biologist, and an invasive species specialist. The burn area will be relatively small at less than an acre, and extends from west of the dam up to the upper pond. The Jasper Fire Department will be on hand both for safety considerations and as a training opportunity.

In other business, Police Chief Nathan Schmitt told the board that the department needed to dispose of a broken flat screen TV and was granted approval to junk the asset. Fire Chief Hochgesang then provided his fuel maintenance and code enforcement reports. Finally, Director of Community Development and Planning Josh Gunselman and Mayor Vonderheide received the board’s permission to attend the AIM Ideas Summit in Ft. Wayne with an overnight stay from October 8 th -10 th . The stated purpose of AIM, or Accelerate Indiana Municipalities, is to empower cities and towns and innovate municipalities through collaboration.
