ISP PURSUIT RESULTS IN ARREST OF NEWBURGH MAN

A Wednesday, May 14th, morning pursuit on I-69 resulted in the arrest of a Newburgh man.

Captain Brian Bailey, of the Indiana State Police, traveled northbound on I-69 at the Greene/Monroe County Line when he observed a black 2018 Volkswagen Jetta approaching his vehicle from behind at an extremely high rate of speed. The Jetta’s driver, later identified as Richard M. Jackson, Age 49, of Newburgh, passed Captain Bailey and increased speed. Captain Bailey activated his emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop, but Jackson refused to stop, and the Jetta's speed continued to increase.

Captain Bailey contacted the Bloomington District, advised he was in pursuit of the black Jetta, and requested assistance as the vehicle continued northbound on I-69. Master Trooper Robert Winstead and Trooper Matthew Harris monitored radio traffic and joined the pursuit as Jackson entered Bloomington city limits along I-69. At one point during the pursuit, the Jetta’s speed was more than 120 mph. Jackson finally brought his vehicle to a stop near the SR45/46 Bypass Exit (120 mile marker) and was arrested without incident. He was transported to the Monroe County Jail, where his custody was transferred for the following charges:

  • Resisting Law Enforcement, a Level 6 Felony
  • Reckless Driving, a Class C Misdemeanor
