Halloween Safety Tips from Local Law Enforcement

Dubois Co.- On Monday, October 31st, parents and their children will be going door to door in hopes of a treat.

Halloween can be one of the most fun times for both adults and kids. Costumes, candy, and parties can offer a relaxing way to unwind after a work day. Among all the fun that Halloween can bring, there is also some things that need to be done to ensure everyone stays safe when out and about.

The Dubois County Sheriff’s office reccomends giving children reflective material to wear to ensure safety when trick-or-treating, keeping an eye on them, not entering homes or backyards, and being aware of your location. After the trick-or-treating has ended, they say to make sure you check your child’s candy. As the old rule goes, if it’s open, throw it away.

“It only takes one incident to make it a liveable incident,” said Jesus Monnarez, Chief Deputy with the Dubois County Sheriff’s office (DCSO). “If a package looks suspicious or you think something might be in there, you can always call us (DCSO) and we can always inspect it and we can try and test it out. More than anything just be careful, it’s a great holiday.”

Chief Deputy Monnarez shared all local agencies will be partolling on Halloween night, so if you need help or want to report something suspicious, they will be available. If you do not see one of their deputies or another state or local officer, you can call 9-1-1 to make your report.

Huntingburg is currently the only city that has released their Halloween trick or treating times, which will be October 31st from 5:30pm to 8:00pm.
