Former Lawmaker to Run for State Treasurer

STATEWIDE--He used to be an Indiana state legislator. Now he's looking to get the Democrat nomination for state treasurer.

John Aguilera of East Chicago announced his candidacy for the position Thursday. He's one of the few Latinos to ever hold office at the statehouse.

In the past, Aguilera has been a two-term Lake County councilman and oversaw public pensions on behalf of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees union.

He would face current Republican state Treasurer Kelly Mitchell, who's been there since 2014.

The Republicans have had control of the state treasurer's office since 1979.
