Expect Increased Security at This Year's Indy 500

SPEEDWAY, Ind.--Safety is one of the priorities for people attending the 102nd running of the Indy 500, just as it has been every year. But, due to "world events", your car will be subject to search. That change was announced at a Thursday press conference at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

All of the security improvements, including possible car checks, will slow traffic down. So, you're encouraged to get there early.

"We're gonna have a dog to check the vehicle for any types of explosives. They're gonna be at multiple gates," said Mike Bates, senior director of safety and security. "I feel like the plan we have in place is excellent."

You will also see extra concrete barriers to protect people walking in and out of the speedway.

As far as that goes, parking passes have been sold out, said Boles. He said you may have to seek out parking at a house in Speedway.

"You'll make new friends," he said. The lots open at 5 a.m. Sunday, while gates open at 6.

Your GPS will likely not provide the best information to get you in and out of the race. IMS Pres. Doug Boles said downloading the speedway app is the best way to avoid obstacles.

The heat will be a factor and you're being asked to do what you can to stay cool, wear sunscreen and drink plenty of water to avoid heat illness.

"It starts off pretty minor with some cramps," said Dr. Geoffrey Billows, director of Medical Services at IMS. He said as heat illness progresses, you can have a seizure or even lose consciousness. Billows said wear light-colored clothing and drink plenty of water or Gatorade, or another electrolyte drink.

He said the medical center has air conditioning, as do several locations throughout the speedway. He said there are also 75 misting stations.

Boles said coolers will be checked at the gates and cannot be larger than 14X14X18. You also can't bring glass bottles, selfie sticks or tote kids in wagons.
