Dubois County Officer Charged for Relationship with Inmate

On Thursday, allegations were made to Community Corrections staff regarding sexual misconduct by a Correction Officer with an inmate. The allegations were immediately reported to the Dubois County Sheriff's Department who initiated an investigation. The officer has been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation of the allegations.

The Sheriff's Department, with the assistance of Dubois Community Correction, launched an immediate investigation into the allegations. Through the investigation, it was determined that Officer Ryan Schmitt had a sexual relationship with a Community Corrections participant at an undisclosed location. 

The participant is no longer at Dubois Community Corrections. The participant is currently being held at a different county jail on unrelated charges.

The incident took place in March of 2021. 

Community Corrections Officer Ryan Schmitt has been charged with a level 5 Felony of Sexual Misconduct with a detainee. The investigation is ongoing.
