Discover the Outdoors Grant Application Open for Next School Year

This month, schools can apply for special funding for field trips to state parks.

Discover the Outdoors is offering financial assistance to all K-12 educators for its field trip grant program. The program, which began in 2013, provides financial grants to teachers for class trips to any Indiana State Parks property. Funding is provided through the Indiana Natural Resources Foundation (INRF).

To date, the program has awarded 287 grants and field trips for over 25,000 students have been funded. The maximum grant award per application is $500. Grant funds can be used for field trip expenses including transportation, program fees, and associated materials. The program seeks to reduce the financial burden on schools and students, making visits to state parks more accessible.

The fund was established in the memory of Tom Huck, a longtime DNR employee who supported the cause of providing outdoor experiences for children. According to the INRF, “Engaging youth in outdoor education is an opportunity for them to explore our natural world. Moving the classroom outside helps create experiences for students where they learn to appreciate, respect and enjoy nature by developing a relationship with the environment.”

Applications can be submitted from March 15-April 30 for the following school year. Applications must be postmarked by April 30.
