TERRE HAUTE -- A couple from Terre Haute were charged in a child abuse case where a one-year-old boy had a split tongue.

Scott A. Edwards and Holly Cota were arrested last week after Cota took her son to the emergency room. Cota told doctors that her son had fallen from his crib.

However, a doctor from the Child Protection Team, said the boy's split tongue was likely caused by a tool like a pair of scissors, said WTWO.

On Friday, Edwards was charged with aggravated battery, battery resulting in serious bodily injury to a person less than 14 years old and neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury.

Cota was initially charged with obstruction of justice, but on Friday was also charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury.

Both entered not guilty pleas, with their trials set in June and July.
