Appeals Court Overturns Stay of Execution For Federal Inmate in Terre Haute

TERRE HAUTE -- The execution of Daniel Lewis Lee can go forward this afternoon at the federal prison in Terre Haute.

The 7th Circuit Court of Appeals released that ruling on Sunday.

Lawyers for the inmate argued there should be a stay of execution due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  A stay of execution was issued but then overturned by Sunday’s appellate-court ruling.

Lee is one of three convicted killers set to die this week by lethal injection.  If the federal execution moves forward this afternoon, it will be the first in over 17-years.

As of now, Lee’s execution will take place this afternoon.  Another federal inmate will be put to death in Terre Haute on Wednesday and a third on Friday.
