PATOKA LAKE -- The COVID-19 pandemic isn't stopping Fourth of July fireworks at Patoka Lake Beach this year.

In preparation for Thunder Over Patoka, officials with Patoka Lake want to remind drivers to expect increased traffic going into the property and arrive early.  Staff recommends spending the entire day to ensure you get into the show.

In a statement on social media Friday, park officials said, "Anyone camping at Patoka Lake should expect that if they leave through the entrance gate anytime on Saturday, July 4 that they may not get back in very quickly. A special viewing section has been set up for fireworks viewing in the Modern Campground section C. If viewing from the beach, campers should follow the path past the camp store down to the beach instead of driving. Allow vehicle traffic at the beach for those entering the property exclusively for the fireworks show."

Thunder Over the Patoka will be taking place at 10:00 p.m. Saturday at the beach.

This year we are expecting increased traffic into the property. Anyone planning to attend the fireworks show should plan to arrive early to the property and beach area. Staff recommends spending the entire day here to ensure that you get into the show. Plan on visiting the Nature Center, having a family picnic, playing a round of disc golf and enjoying the beach. Parking spots will be limited. With increased visitation, property staff expect to meet capacity. Once the capacity has been met, vehicles will be let into Newton Stewart State Recreation Area on a one by one basis as another vehicle leaves.
