Semi collides with trailer on Hwy 56

An improperly hitched trailer triggered an accident on Hwy 56 west of Ireland Thursday afternoon.

According to the Dubois County Sheriff’s Department, Alberto Barrios of Otwell was traveling eastbound on Hwy 56 just before 2:30pm when a small trailer hooked to his pick-up truck came unhitched.  The trailer went left of center, into the path of a westbound semi-tractor trailer piloted by Thomas Linley of Brilliant Alabama.

Linley attempted to avoid hitting the trailer with his 2007 Peterbilt rig, but was unable to prevent a collision.  After impacting the trailer, the steering on Linley’s semi was damaged.  This caused his truck to go left of center, off the south side of the road, striking a large embankment before coming to a stop.

Memorial EMS transported Linley to the hospital for complaint of pain to the lower legs.  Linley’s semi and the Barrios trailer were both total losses following the 2:26pm accident.  Dubois County Sheriff’s deputies charged Alberto Barrios with not having his trailer registered and a safety chain violation.
