Flu Classified “Wide Spread” in Indiana
STATEWIDE — The CDC has classified the flu as “widespread” in Indiana and neighboring Kentucky and Illinois.
Health officials recommend washing your hands often to keep from getting sick.
Also, avoid close contact with people who are sick and don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth. Be sure to cover your cough and sneeze, and, if you are sick, stay home.
Doctors are also recommending people get a flu shot.
But some health officials are warning, this year, the vaccine may not protect you from the dreaded flu.
While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention still recommend getting the shot, recent reports suggest the shot might not be as effective at preventing the flu this season. That’s because of an increase in the amount of H3N2 cases.
The CDC reports that this strain mutates at a quicker rate than the vaccination can be distributed, resulting in the poor effectiveness of the vaccine.
If you happen to get the flu, the CDC recommends taking antiviral drugs such as Tamiflu to help combat the illness and shorten the length of your sickness by a day or two.
