Jasper Police Sergeant Doug Hettinger announced through a news release that they are stepping up patrols to catch school bus stop arm violators.
This comes after Greater Jasper School Superintendent Dr. Tracey Lorey issued an appeal to the public to heed all school bus stops with their red lights flashing and stop arms extended.
Lorey said in her own news release that changes in bus operating procedures at Fifth Street and Tenth Street Elementary Schools have motorists driving past buses with the lights flashing and arms extended.
The Jasper Police release reminds motorists that all drivers are required to stop for school buses in the mornings and afternoons when coming upon a school bus with lights flashing and stop arms extended – except when on a divided highway.
Hettinger urged drivers to remain alert and use extra caution when around school buses.
