Jasper Board of Public Works & Safety Meeting

The Jasper Board of Public Works and Safety met this morning and heard a request for safety towers, also known as Emergency Call boxes for the Riverwalk and other areas of the County.

Both Bridgette Jarboe and Josh Gunselman have jobs with the county, but through their involvement with the Dubois County Leadership Academy, their team came up with the idea of installing safety towers, or emergency call boxes along the Riverwalk.

The units would be used if there is a medical or other emergency, dispatchers can locate the person quickly along the Riverwalk and provide emergency services.

Jarboe and Gunselman told the Board that they are having a Safety Stroll along the Riverwalk on Saturday, July 20th at 8 am to raise awareness for health and well-being issues along with information on these call boxes.

Gunselman told WITZ News during an interview that these safety towers would be recommended for other areas of the County, too, not just in Jasper:

Gunselman says that the units are already in use on college and university campuses around the nation.  He had no cost estimates on each one, since they have not yet chosen a vendor or specific model to use.

But, the service provided by the units would allow a person traveling along the path to alert authorities about a medical or other emergency at the call box and have dispatch personnel send out emergency responders as needed.

Mayor Terry Seitz and the members of the Board of Public Works like the idea and Seitz said he could see the Economic Development funds being used for expenses associated with the purchase and installation.

Gunselman sent an email after the meeting stating that Matrix integration has now officially signed on as a technical advisor to their Leadership team and has agreed to be a corporate partner.  He says “we welcome and appreciate their participation in this project and commend (them for) their community focus.”

Also in the meeting, Strassenfest Committee Chairman Derrick Bair appeared before the Board and presented the annual Street Closings and City Property Usage request for the Strassenfest on August 1 through 4th with a few minor changes.
