Pike County – Thursday morning, June 27, at approximately 8:06 a.m., Indiana State Police, Pike County Sheriff’s Department and Warrick County Sheriff’s Department responded to an overturned coal truck on S.R. 61 near C.R. 1300 South that injured a Lynnville woman.
Preliminary investigation revealed 28 year old Adam Benefiel of Petersburg, was driving a 2001 Mack coal truck northbound on S.R. 61 at C.R. 1300 South. 75 year old Jerry Claridge and his wife, 74 year old Phyllis Claridge of Lynnville, were walking southbound along S.R. 61 just north of C.R. 1300 South.
As the coal truck entered the curve the load shifted causing the vehicle to flip onto its side. Coal from the trailer struck Phyllis Claridge. The impact from the coal swept her off her feet and pinned her under a metal fence located on the east side of S.R. 61. Her husband was able to pull her out front under the gate and walk her to a neighbor’s house.
She was airlifted to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville where she is currently being treated for non-life threatening injuries. Jerry Claridge was not injured. Benefiel, who was not injured, was issued a citation for Speed too Fast to Avoid a Collision.
