Dubois County Sheriff’s deputies are still investigating a two vehicle accident that injured a Ferdinand man Saturday night.
According to Sheriff’s deputies, 34 year old Nicholas Betz of Birdseye and 22 year old Reece VanWinkle of Huntingburg were traveling in opposite directions along CR 400 South just after 7:30pm Saturday. Both men told law enforcement the approaching vehicle was in their lane of travel.
VanWinkle’s 2009 Jeep went off road to avoid striking the Betz Chevy pick-up. As the Jeep was rolling over, a passenger, Benjamin Schwoeppe of Ferdinand was thrown from the vehicle. Deputies say Schwoeppe was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. He was taken to Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center, then helicoptered to St. Mary’s in Evansville. Hospital personnel report Schwoeppe is in serious, but stable condition with a spinal fracture.
Betz and VanWinkle were not injured in the accident, which totalled the VanWinkle Jeep. Both men were cited by sheriff’s deputies for OWI. VanWinkle had a blood alcohol reading of .09%, just over the legal limit. Betz registered at .19%, nearly 2 ½ times the legal limit. Authorities are continuing the investigation.
